We are delighted to be hosting a very special screening of work produced by young people from across Edinburgh as part of our Creative Scotland backed CashBack for Creativity scheme ‘Xpress Yourself’.
Since September 2012 four groups of 50 youngsters aged 12-19 from the Hearts Filmmaking Group, Hibs Filmmaking Group, Wellington School and Broomhouse Young Carers have been meeting weekly to devise, plan, script, shoot and edit short films. They were trained, guided and supported through this process by script and directing tutor, Graham Fitzpatrick; producing tutor Sarah Drummond and technical tutor Steven Abercromby-Cook from Screen Education Edinburgh.
Seven films were made and will be screened at this showcase event:
• Memories; A drama involving a writer having to come to terms with his past before he can put pen back to paper.
• The Man With No Name; A modern day western where a boy takes inspiration from his screen hero to face up to his tormentors with disastrous results.
• Six Steps Away; A romantic drama about a girl who pursues love in order to conquer her fear of the number six.
• The Killing Moon; A melancholic tale of a boy on the edge of reality who is deeply obsessed with Yeats and the moon.
• Fate; A music video romance that sees an unfortunate couple coming together after being stood up by their respective dates at the cinema.
• Toby’s Revenge; A spooky drama about a bullied boy who turns the tables on his antagonists by pretending to be a ghost.
• Take Care of Your Own; An emotional drama about a young boy who is left to look after his teenage sister’s baby as she goes out to a party.
Graham Fitzpatrick, Screen Education Edinburgh’s Creative Manager said: “As one of the foremost providers of film-making education for young people in Scotland, we have been delighted to educate and nurture the latest participants in our CashBack for Creativity Programme. Over the months the young people have been learning about all aspects of short film-making and this screening is a showcase of their development. Not only has their knowledge and skills been enhanced but their confidence and aspirations for the future have grown throughout. “
The screening will take place on Saturday 27th April at 1pm at Cineworld, Fountain Park. Along with the seven short films, a ‘making of’ film that features the young people giving an insight into the project in their own words will also be screened.
The filmmakers shall be in attendance, along with their families and invited guests. There are a limited number of tickets for industry professionals and members of the public – to book email Alex McGarry alex@screen-ed.org
CashBack for Creativity re-invests the monies seized from criminals back into cultural activities for young people across Scotland. The programme is supported by the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities Initiative.
