25 young people developed on Craft Skills 2022

25 young people from across the UK took part in our BFI Film Academy Craft Skills 2022 programme, including short film and screenwriting development online throughout July, and key craft skills development, short film production, and industry engagement as part of an 8 day residential in Edinburgh.

After a competitive application process, a talented and diverse group of young people were selected to take part this year including Rachael Bain from Lincoln, Archie Barton from Cheltenham, Jacob Bradley from Fareham, Mariana Cadena from London, and Chloe Chen from Redcar.

Also Sam Craigie from Dunbar, Rory Easton from Edinburgh, Catherine Fitzhugh Wilson from Stewarton, Sophie Graham from Hamilton, and Matthew Haddow from Edinburgh.

As well as Ella Henry from Port Talbot, Kimberly Johnson from London, Peyi Johnson from Gillingham, Lana Joy from Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and Shadman Kabir from Bromley.

Also Scarlett MacPherson from Holmfirth, Alfie Malley from Frome, Finlay Mulligan-Wild from Manchester, Joshua Nunn from Four Marks, and Charlie Quashie-McDonald from Cuddington.

As well as Jake Sefton from Brighton, Owen Smith from Rickmansworth, Lowri Jean Thomas from Pontypridd, Kirk Vista from Bridgend, and Charlie Wedge from Telford.

Developing their knowledge and skills in short film and screenwriting took place online throughout July, with each learner developing and realising a short film screenplay, culminating in 3 being chosen to go into production as part of an 8 day residential in Edinburgh from 30th July to 6th August.

On the residential, learners' skills and knowledge in key craft areas of directing, cinematography, sound, production, and editing were developed intensively, leading to the production and post production of short films Dilemma, Doom Scrolling, and Runner, with learners experiencing all craft roles on set to further enhance their development.

Industry masterclasses covering the film value chain also took place, including the areas each guest worked in, the opportunities, skills required, and routes in, and the personal journeys and experiences of writer/director Christina Ebohon-Green, actor Jack Lowden, and the BFI's Noel Goodwin and Rhia Aden.

BFI Film Academy Craft Skills

On our BFI Film Academy Craft Skills Residential course, learners receive intensive learning in screenwriting, cinematography, sound, directing, production and editing, engage in industry masterclasses, and produce a short film. Applications for the summer 2023 course are now closed.
