In January, our Young Filmmakers Hub youngsters started back with us at SEE and have been busy refreshing their knowledge from last term across all areas of filmmaking!

Over the past month, learners have taken part in a range of practical exercises to strengthen their technical skills, with a particular focus on framing and lighting. Groups 1 and 2 challenged themselves to create a short sequence without dialogue, pushing their visual storytelling abilities and thinking carefully about how meaning can be conveyed through image alone.

They also began exploring characters in preparation for story development. Through hot-seat–style activities, students worked collaboratively to build detailed hypothetical characters, deepening their understanding of motivation, backstory, and personality.

Group 3 have continued building their confidence with equipment, developing their skills through a range of practical exercises that build on what they have already learned. They are now beginning to develop their own original story ideas, which they will pitch to their peers, before all select one to take forward into production. We’re looking forward to seeing their creativity come to life as they move into the next stage of the filmmaking process!
