We’re delighted to celebrate the incredible achievement of filmmakers from Screen Education Edinburgh, whose short film What’s in a Bowl? has won ‘Best Film: 16–19’ at the Into Film Awards 2026.

This national award is a fantastic recognition of the creativity, commitment and talent of the team, who brought a thoughtful and deeply personal story to the screen. The film explores questions of identity, heritage and belonging through the story of a young Chinese migrant in Edinburgh reconnecting with family and culture through food.

Created by Alice, Macy, Leo, Ruri, Oscar and Kai as part of the BFI Film Academy Short Course for Edinburgh and South-East Scotland. BFI Film Academy is a training programme for young people aged 16-25 who are looking to break into the screen industries. It offers a hands-on, collaborative filmmaking experience, with a strong focus on developing technical skills. The team excelled on the course and What’s in a Bowl? is a powerful example of what young people can achieve when they are supported to tell stories that matter to them.

The Into Film Awards are the UK’s leading celebration of young filmmaking talent, and to see this work recognised on a national stage is a huge moment. We are so proud of everything this group has achieved. Their collaboration, imagination and talent shine through in the film, and this award is a wonderful moment in what we hope will be many to come for the group.
